Congress MP Manish Tewari on Tuesday submitted an Adjournment Motion in the Lok Sabha, urging the suspension of regular business to discuss concerns regarding alleged irregularities in the higher judiciary.
In his notice, Tewari underscored the significance of the matter, stating that India’s democracy is built on four essential pillars—the executive, legislature, judiciary, and a free press. He argued that recent reports of alleged judicial aberrations have raised alarms among the legal community and the public, necessitating parliamentary intervention.
“The recent reports of alleged aberrations in the judiciary have disturbed the legal fraternity and other citizens across the country. Parliament, being the supreme legislative body that exercises oversight on both the executive and even an independent judiciary, must rise to the occasion,” Tewari stated in his motion.
He called on the government to make a detailed statement in the House regarding the incidents in question, emphasizing the need to uphold the integrity, impartiality, and fairness of India’s judicial system. Seeking urgent permission to raise the matter, he stressed that maintaining public confidence in judicial processes is of utmost importance.
Meanwhile, both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha witnessed disruptions on Monday as treasury bench members targeted the Congress over Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar’s purported remarks about the Constitution. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Union Health Minister JP Nadda led the BJP’s charge, demanding accountability from the Congress. In response, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh filed a breach of privilege notice against Rijiju in Rajya Sabha.
The Rajya Sabha also saw uproar over BJP’s allegations that Shivakumar had spoken about “changing the Constitution,” further escalating tensions between the ruling party and the opposition.
